Ghaziabad, Feb 1: A 44-year-old man was taken into custody by Kavi Nagar police after allegedly assaulting his 70-year-old mother at their home in Ghaziabad, officials said on Saturday.

The incident came to light after the man’s sister, who lives in the United States, spotted the assault on a CCTV camera installed in her mother’s room and alerted neighbours and the police. The accused has been identified as Nishant Thakur, a resident of Sector 23, Sanjay Nagar, Madhuban Bapudham.

ACP Kavinagar Suryabali Maurya said a video showing the assault was received by the police on Saturday. “After examining the footage, legal action was initiated and the accused was taken into custody,” he said.

Police officials said the CCTV camera had been installed by Thakur’s sister, Nisha, to monitor their mother’s health as she was unwell. After witnessing the incident on the live feed, she shared the video with residents of the housing society and urged them to inform the police.

The video shows Thakur entering his mother’s room and physically assaulting her while she was lying on the bed. Society members later handed over the footage to the police.

Officials said a formal case is yet to be registered and further investigation is underway.
