Prof Bhaskar Hegde bids farewell to SDM College, inspires generations of journalism students

Beltangady, Jan 31: Prof Bhaskar Hegde, who served 31 years as a lecturer and head of the journalism department at SDM College, retired from active service on Saturday. His simple demeanour, practical experience, strong leadership, and emphasis on value-based education have left a lasting impact on students, said senior student and current CEO of Kshema Vana, Bengaluru, Shraddha Amit.

The college celebrated his illustrious career with “Bhaskar Parva”, a felicitation ceremony organised by his senior students at the Indraprastha Auditorium in Ujire. The event featured the release of a documentary, the launch of his publications, and tributes from students and faculty alike.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shraddha Amit said: “Prof Hegde earned immense love, trust, and respect from students. Even in a rural college, he ensured access to all facilities and timely information. His exemplary values and knowledge have been an inspiring beacon for everyone. While he may not have expressed joy openly, he always encouraged students to approach him in times of difficulty or challenges.”

Under the guidance of then-principal Dr B Yashovarma, Prof Hegde initiated numerous academic experiments and innovations. “His vast student community is his priceless legacy,” Shraddha Amit added.

Dr S Satishchandra, secretary of SDM Educational Institutions, who released the felicitation booklet, said: “Thanks to Prof Hegde’s practical training, knowledge, and skill-development initiatives, his students today hold high positions in India and abroad, serving as cultural ambassadors of SDM College. This fills the institution with pride and admiration.”

Prof P Vishwanath, Principal of the college and presiding over the event, said: “Under Dr B Yashovarma’s leadership, a student-centric curriculum was successfully implemented by Prof Hegde. He guided and motivated students as if they were his own children, ensuring their growth and development.”

Prof Hegde was felicitated and honoured during the ceremony and released his “Chiguru” magazine and the book “Kadamba”. His son, Shashank, was also present. The event was welcomed by Satish Kumar Andije, lecturer, journalism department, Kuvempu University, and Karnataka Media Academy secretary Sahana extended her gratitude. Senior student Guruprasad coordinated the programme.

In a lasting tribute, senior students announced that five scholarships will be awarded annually to students in honour of Prof Hegde.
