Kolkata, Jan 31: A waiter at a popular bar-cum-restaurant on Park Street has been arrested after an actor and YouTuber accused the establishment of serving him beef instead of the mutton steak he had ordered.
The incident reportedly took place at Olypub, a well-known restaurant in Kolkata’s nightlife hub, where actor and social media influencer Sayak Chakraborty visited on Friday night along with two friends. According to the complaint, the group ordered mutton steak but later alleged they were served beef without being informed.
Sayak claimed the dish was placed on the table without clarification, and the group assumed it was mutton as per their order. The matter allegedly came to light when another dish was later brought to the table, following which, Sayak said, the staff indicated that the earlier serving had been beef while the new one was mutton.
A video of the confrontation later went viral on social media, in which Sayak is heard narrating the sequence of events and questioning the restaurant staff. The clip also shows an employee admitting that a mistake had occurred. The altercation intensified after Sayak referred to his religious identity during the exchange, expressing shock over being served beef.
After leaving the restaurant, Sayak lodged a complaint at Park Street Police Station on Friday night. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and arrested one restaurant employee on Saturday.
Confirming the arrest, a senior Kolkata Police official said an employee of a Park Street restaurant-bar had been taken into custody following allegations of serving beef instead of goat meat. Police said an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was due to negligence, miscommunication or deliberate action, and the role of other staff members and management is also being examined.
The controversy gained traction online after the video circulated widely. While Sayak reportedly deleted the clip after initially posting it, the footage had already been shared and reposted by several users. It was later uploaded by BJP leader and lawyer Tarunjyoti Tewari, further amplifying the issue.
The BJP also criticised the restaurant over the alleged incident, with party leader Keya Ghosh condemning the matter on social media and questioning how such an alleged “mistake” could occur.
