Bhopal, Jan 27: A shocking chain-snatching incident inside a lift at AIIMS Bhopal has raised serious concerns about security at the premier health institution in Madhya Pradesh. The episode, captured on CCTV, shows a masked man snatching a woman employee’s mangalsutra while she resisted, leaving her pearl necklace broken on the floor.
The incident occurred near the hospital’s blood bank and came to light on Monday after the victim, Varsha, reported it to the administration. AIIMS Bhopal has registered a complaint at Bagh Sevania police station and initiated internal meetings to assess lapses in security. “Action will be taken against the responsible personnel,” said a senior AIIMS official, speaking anonymously.

According to the footage, the attacker, posing as a visitor, entered the lift and engaged Varsha in conversation before lunging at her on the third floor. He managed to escape via the staircase with the mangalsutra.
The incident has triggered public outrage and a political row. Madhya Pradesh Congress leader of opposition Umang Singhar criticized chief minister and home ninister Mohan Yadav, posting the video on social media and calling it evidence of the deteriorating law-and-order situation under the BJP government.
AIIMS authorities confirmed a security review is underway to prevent such incidents in the future, while the police investigation continues.
