Javed Akhtar to take legal action over fake AI video

New Delhi, Jan 2: Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has expressed outrage over a fake AI-generated video falsely claiming that he has “turned to God” and is considering legal action against those responsible.

On Friday, Javed took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the video showing him wearing a skull cap, calling it “rubbish.” He said he plans to approach cyber police and pursue legal action against both the creators of the deepfake and those circulating it, citing damage to his reputation and credibility.

“A fake video is in circulation showing my computer-generated picture with a topi on my head claiming that ultimately I have turned to God. It is rubbish,” he tweeted. He added, “I am seriously considering reporting this to the cyber police and ultimately dragging the person responsible and those who forward it to court.”

The AI-generated video appeared shortly after Javed participated in a public debate with Islamic scholar Mufti Shamail Nadwi in New Delhi titled ‘Does God Exist?’ at the Constitution Club of India.

Javed’s reaction follows actor Kangana Ranaut’s recent concerns over AI-edited images of her in suits instead of her actual attire in Parliament. Other actors, including Sreeleela and Nivetha Thomas, have also raised awareness about AI misuse, urging ethical practices and respect for privacy.

The incidents underscore growing concerns in India over the misuse of AI-generated content and its potential to harm personal reputation.
