Vidisha, Dec 29: Locals were left shocked on Sunday when a stray dog was found carrying the body of a newborn near the Parashari cremation ground in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh.

People present at the cremation ground for last rites noticed the dog and immediately alerted the police. Ganj Basoda Dehat police station in-charge Manoj Dubey said the infant appeared to be around four to five months old.

Dubey added that there have been instances of newborns being buried near cremation grounds, and animals such as badgers or dogs sometimes unearth the bodies. “It is possible that the body surfaced in this manner and was picked up by dogs,” he said.

Police have buried the newborn’s body and launched an investigation into the incident. This grim episode serves as a reminder of several similar cases reported earlier in 2025.
