Uudpi, Dec 27: The Cardiology team at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal has successfully treated a rare and complex cardiac condition—ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm—using an advanced minimally invasive approach, enabling the patient to recover quickly with minimal hospital stay.
The patient, a 50-year-old woman from a neighbouring district, had been experiencing progressive shortness of breath and swelling of the legs for several months. After consulting multiple physicians and cardiologists, she was diagnosed with a ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm, a rare type of cardiac defect, and was advised to undergo open-heart surgery.

Seeking an alternative to conventional surgery, the patient approached the Cardiology Department at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Under the care of Dr Tom Devasia and Dr Monika J, she underwent comprehensive evaluation, including detailed echocardiography and cardiac CT imaging, which confirmed the diagnosis and helped plan further management.
Considering the patient’s reluctance to undergo open-heart surgery, the cardiac team offered a state-of-the-art minimally invasive solution—percutaneous catheter-based device closure. This advanced interventional procedure allows closure of the cardiac defect through a small vascular puncture, thereby avoiding the risks, pain, and prolonged recovery associated with open surgery.
The procedure was successfully performed by Dr Tom Devasia and his team, with expert support from Dr Guru Prasad Rai (Cardiac Surgeon), Dr Sunil B V (Anaesthesiology), and Dr Krishnananda Nayak (echocardiographic imaging). The patient’s post-procedure recovery was smooth, with significant improvement in symptoms, and she was discharged in stable condition within two days.
