Dehradun, Dec 27: A 24-year-old student from Tripura died after he was allegedly stabbed in Uttarakhand’s capital Dehradun for objecting to racial abuse, police said.
The victim, identified as Angel Chakma, breathed his last at a hospital here on Thursday, nearly 15 days after the attack. Police have arrested five persons in connection with the murder, while one accused, a Nepali national, has reportedly fled across the border.

According to the police complaint filed by Angel’s brother Michel, the two had gone to a market on the evening of December 9 to buy household items when a group of intoxicated men allegedly began using caste-based slurs against Angel. When he objected, the accused attacked him with a knife and a rod.
The FIR stated that Angel suffered serious injuries during the assault. Hospital sources said he had sustained deep wounds on his head and neck, which ultimately proved fatal.
Michel had earlier expressed fear that the accused, whom he described as influential, might attack them again. Angel’s father, a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier posted in the northeast, has taken his son’s body to their hometown for the last rites.
