Sunita Ahuja backs Jaya Bachchan, says veteran actor’s reaction to paparazzi stems from irritation

Mumbai, Dec 19: Sunita Ahuja, wife of actor Govinda, has voiced her support for veteran actress Jaya Bachchan following criticism over her remarks on paparazzi culture in India, suggesting that constant media attention can often become overwhelming and that Jaya’s response was driven by irritation.

In her latest vlog, Sunita answered questions from fans, including why she personally interacts playfully with paparazzi, while Jaya has openly expressed displeasure. Defending Jaya, Sunita said in Hindi, “Look, everyone has their own thoughts and thinking. Jaya ma’am must be getting irritated. I can’t say anything about her. She is very big. She must not like it. So, if she doesn’t like it, then paparazzi shouldn’t do it.”

She added, “I have a lot of fun with everyone. I feel like I should get up in the morning and start having fun because there is nothing in life. There is only one life. It is very difficult to get a human life. You should live your life with a smile. There is no point in fighting. In the end, we all have to go up. So, live your life with a smile. If Jaya ji doesn’t like it, then I can’t say anything about her. I love Jaya ji a lot and I will always love her.”

The controversy stems from Jaya Bachchan’s comments during the We The Women event in Mumbai last month, where she criticised paparazzi for their intrusive behaviour. She said, “It is strange. I am the product of the media, but my relationship with the paparazzi is zero. Who are these people? Are they trained to be representing the people of this country? You call them media? I come from media! My father was a journalist. I have tremendous respect for such people.”

Jaya further criticised paparazzi who take photos without permission, questioning their education, background, and professionalism: “Just because they can go through social media, they think they can take your picture and say what they want?”

Over the years, Jaya has repeatedly expressed discomfort with paparazzi at public events, often reprimanding them, which has drawn backlash from some quarters. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, among others, has called her a snob for her strong stance against invasive media practices.

Sunita Ahuja’s comments come as a reminder of the different ways celebrities engage with the media, with some choosing cordial interaction, while others, like Jaya, insist on privacy and respect.
