Strong quake jolts Japan; tsunami alerts issued

Daijiworld Media Network - Tokyo

Tokyo, Dec 9: A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Aomori Prefecture late Monday night, shaking Hachinohe City with a maximum intensity of 6-plus and prompting immediate tsunami warnings along the Pacific coasts of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said seven people were injured as the government’s Crisis Management Centre swung into action to assess the situation. Emergency teams have been deployed across the affected regions.

Authorities warned residents to stay on high alert, cautioning that aftershocks could follow and a tsunami of up to three metres remained possible. People living along coastal areas were urged to remain vigilant throughout the week as assessments and safety operations continue.
