Interfaith wedding ‘just noise’, says Sonakshi Sinha as she opens up on marriage with Zaheer Iqbal

Mumbai, Dec 6: Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has responded firmly to the criticism surrounding her interfaith marriage with actor Zaheer Iqbal. Speaking on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast, she said that the uproar following their June 2024 wedding was unnecessary and driven largely by strangers who had no place in their personal decisions.

Sonakshi said that despite the noise, she focused only on the happiness of finally beginning a new chapter with her long-time partner. Describing how outsiders felt entitled to judge her choice, she remarked that a grown woman choosing her life partner should not invite such scrutiny. She added that she was neither the first nor the last person to marry someone from a different community.

The actor shared that the wedding day was overwhelming due to the negativity circulating on social media. Wanting to preserve the joy of the moment, Sonakshi chose to disable comments online, saying she did not want any negativity directed at her family or her partner during such a special occasion.

Reflecting on her relationship, Sonakshi revealed that she and Zaheer had gone through a rough phase three years into dating, where misunderstandings frequently arose. Determined to make the relationship work, the couple opted for professional counselling. She credited Zaheer for suggesting couples therapy, saying the sessions helped them understand each other better and ultimately strengthened their bond.

Sonakshi affirmed that the love they share and the life they have chosen together remain far more important than the “noise” outside. “It was beautiful for us,” she stated, expressing gratitude for finally being able to build a future with Zaheer.
