Ranchi, Nov 24: A major political controversy has erupted in Jharkhand after state Health Minister Irfan Ansari urged people to “lock up” Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting homes for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. His remarks, made during a public meeting, have triggered strong objections from the BJP, which has demanded immediate legal action.
The Congress has been leading nationwide protests against the SIR process, claiming it is being misused to delete voters’ names. In several Opposition-ruled states, including West Bengal and Jharkhand, the issue has intensified over the past few weeks.

At the meeting, Ansari said, “Everyone should protest against SIR. If the BLO comes to your house, lock them up inside. They are coming to delete names from the voters list. Release him only after I arrive.” His comments rapidly drew criticism, with BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain calling the statement “highly irresponsible”.
“A case should be filed against Jharkhand Minister Irfan Ansari, and strict action should be taken,” Hussain said.
In September, the Jharkhand Assembly had already passed a resolution opposing the SIR exercise, alleging it was an attempt to weaken parliamentary democracy and deprive marginalised communities of their voting rights. Bengal is considering a similar move.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has intensified her criticism of the process, citing “inhuman work pressure” on BLOs. In a detailed letter to the Election Commission last week, she wrote, “BLOs are now operating far beyond human limits… Instead of offering support or extending timelines, the CEO’s office has resorted to intimidation.”
As tensions rise, the Election Commission has yet to respond publicly to the series of protests, allegations, and political clashes emerging around the SIR exercise.
