Bangladeshi intruder held in Khowai, fresh break-in attempts near border

Tripura, Nov 24: Tripura Police on Sunday arrested a suspected Bangladeshi intruder from Durganagar in Khowai district. The man, identified as Mohammad Sagar Farazi, hails from Khulna in Bangladesh.

According to police, Farazi had first crossed into West Bengal illegally before travelling through Guwahati and Silchar to reach Teliamura in Khowai district. “We found cash of Rs 7,300 from him. We are investigating the matter,” a police official said.

The arrest comes amid increasing concerns over cross-border activities. On Saturday night, unidentified persons — suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals — allegedly attempted to break into houses, shops and steal livestock in Kailashahar under Unakoti district. The incident took place close to the India-Bangladesh international border.

Last month, three Bangladeshi cattle smugglers were killed in clashes with Indian villagers near the border in Khowai district.

Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh, most of which is fenced with barbed wire. However, a few stretches remain unfenced due to local disputes, making them vulnerable to infiltration.
