Kolkata, Nov 15: A massive fire erupted in the early hours of Saturday at an electrical goods shop on Ezra Street in the bustling Burrabazar area, triggering panic among traders and residents as flames rapidly spread to adjoining structures.
According to fire brigade officials, as many as 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to battle the inferno. The blaze, described as “highly intense,” engulfed neighbouring shops and buildings within minutes, eventually spreading to a ten-storey structure located right opposite the affected shop.

Firefighters faced severe challenges in reaching the heart of the fire due to Burrabazar’s characteristically narrow lanes, coupled with stacks of inflammable materials and construction blocks lining the pathways. Officials said the congested layout made the operation “extremely difficult,” slowing down efforts to bring the flames under control.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. However, the incident sparked fear and anxiety among small traders, many of whom were seen rushing away from the scene fearing further escalation.
The blaze was initially noticed by early morning residents and shopkeepers after flames emerged from the first floor of 17 Ezra Street—an area densely packed with both commercial establishments and residential units. Locals attempted to contain the fire before the arrival of the fire brigade, but the situation worsened rapidly as the flames reached unidentified combustible materials.
Firefighting operations were still underway at the time of reporting, with officials monitoring nearby buildings to prevent further spread. Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
