Beaverton, Oct 24: In a groundbreaking leap for sports innovation, Nike has unveiled Project Amplify — the world’s first powered footwear system designed to enhance performance during everyday running and walking.
Developed in collaboration with robotics company Dephy, the system aims to help athletes cover greater distances with reduced effort, functioning as what Nike describes as “a second set of calf muscles.” Unlike shoes meant for elite runners seeking record times, Project Amplify targets everyday athletes looking to move faster and farther with less strain.

In a press release issued on October 23, Nike reiterated its philosophy that “if you have a body, you are an athlete,” underscoring that the product is built for everyone.
Engineered to complement natural leg and ankle movement, Project Amplify merges biomechanical intelligence with advanced technology. It features a compact motor, drive belt, and rechargeable battery placed within an ankle cuff that synchronizes with a carbon-fibre-plated running shoe. The footwear can be worn independently or connected to the powered mechanism for added propulsion.
The movement algorithms behind this innovation were developed by the Nike Sport Research Lab, ensuring that the system adapts dynamically to each user’s stride and motion.
Michael Donaghu, Vice-President of Create The Future, Emerging Sport and Innovation at Nike, said, “Project Amplify began with a single question — what if we could help athletes move faster and farther with less energy and more fun? It’s about seamlessly adding power to your stride.”
The concept is inspired by the same principle that revolutionized cycling through e-bikes — reducing physical effort while amplifying enjoyment and efficiency. Nike hopes Project Amplify will similarly transform how people approach running and walking, making these activities more accessible and sustainable.
The new technology is part of four major innovations Nike is introducing this month, including advancements in Air apparel, temperature-regulating systems, and performance-focused mind science — further solidifying the brand’s reputation for redefining the boundaries of athletic performance.
