Kanpur, Oct 18: In a bizarre incident, two brothers who faked a bomb threat in hopes of securing seats on a train ended up behind bars instead.

Deepak Chauhan, a mechanic from Ludhiana, and his brother Ankit, who works at a factory in Noida, boarded the Amrapali Express from Delhi on Thursday night. The train, running between Amritsar and Katihar in Bihar, was crowded, leaving the duo without seats.

Frustrated, the brothers got into a scuffle with other passengers during the journey. By the time the train reached Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, they hatched a reckless plan — to call the police control room and falsely report a bomb onboard, hoping passengers would disembark and free up seats.

The call triggered massive panic. Bomb squads, fire brigades, and police teams rushed to Kanpur Central station, halting the train for over 40 minutes as each coach was thoroughly checked. No explosives were found.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Deepak and Ankit switched off their phones and hid in Kanpur’s Faithfulganj area. However, police traced them the next morning after they turned their phones back on.

“They don’t have a prior criminal record, but given the seriousness of the case, the Anti-Terrorist Squad is also interrogating them,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Akanksha Pandey.

The duo’s prank not only caused chaos and delay but also cost them their freedom — and still didn’t get them a seat.
