Mumbai, Oct 15: Veteran actress and accomplished dancer Madhumati, celebrated for her remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 87. Known for her mesmerising performances, she was often compared to legendary contemporaries like Helen.

Madhumati appeared in notable films including ‘Ankhen’, ‘Tower House’, ‘Shikari’, and ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, leaving a lasting impression on audiences with her talent and grace.

Actor Vindu Dara Singh expressed his condolences on X, saying, “Rest in peace, our teacher and guide #Madhumati ji. A beautiful life led, filled with love and blessings from so many of us who learnt dancing from this legend.”

Born in Maharashtra in 1938, Madhumati began her career as a dancer in 1957 with an unreleased Marathi film. She trained in classical dance forms including Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Manipuri, and Kathakali, and also performed in film dance sequences, earning admiration for her skill and dedication.

At the age of 19, Madhumati married Deepak Manohar, a respected dancer and father of four. Despite initial hesitation from her mother, she went ahead with the marriage, marking a significant chapter in her personal life.
