Kaup, Oct 15: “The greatness of Dr S L Bhyrappa’s works lies not only in their experiential depth but also in their strong connection to real-life situations and their relatable narrative style, which make his writings timeless and ever-relevant to readers,” said Prof Kokkarne Surendranath Shetty, retired head of the Department of Political Science, MGM College, Udupi.

He was speaking after paying tribute to the celebrated novelist at the “Nudi Namana – A tribute to Dr S L Bhyrappa” programme organized jointly by Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Kaup unit of the Parishat, and Government First Grade College, Kaup, held on October 14 at the college auditorium.

Prof Shetty added, “Dr Bhyrappa’s masterpieces such as Aavarana, Daatu, Vamshavriksha, Saakshi, and Parva mirror the realities of human life. His acceptance of differing views and ability to win over both admirers and critics alike earned him the stature of an emperor in the world of literature. Rising from poverty through dedication and perseverance, he became a fountain of inspiration. His life should serve as a guiding light for today’s youth.”

The programme was presided over by Prof Gopalkrishna M Gaonkar, principal of the college. Udupi District Sahitya Parishat president Neelavara Surendra Adiga and other dignitaries were present on the dais.

Kaup Sahitya Parishat Unit president Pundalik Marathe welcomed the gathering. Dr Raviraj Shetty, assistant professor, Department of Kannada, presented the preamble. Treasurer Vidyadhar Puranik compered the event, and English lecturer Deepika Suvarna proposed a vote of thanks.
