Udupi / Vijayapura, Oct 13: Veteran Kannada film and theatre actor, and director of Rangayana Dharwad Raju Talikote (born Rajesaba Maktumasaab Talikoti) has passed away at the age of 59 following a cardiac arrest late on Sunday night.

The incident occurred shortly after he had wrapped up shooting for an upcoming film in Hebri, Udupi district.

According to reliable sources, the actor completed his scenes by around 6 pm on Sunday. While resting later that night at his accommodation, he reportedly developed breathing complications at approximately 11:59 pm. He was immediately rushed to Manipal’s Kasturba Medical College Hospital, where he was placed on ventilator support. Despite medical efforts, he did not respond to treatment and was declared dead.

Talikote had suffered a prior cardiac event in the past, for which he had received treatment. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through the Kannada film industry and theatre circles, particularly in North Karnataka, where he maintained deep cultural ties.

Born in Chikkasindagi village of Sindagi taluk in Vijayapura district, Raju Talikote became a familiar face in the Kannada entertainment industry for his signature drunkard roles that resonated with audiences for their comic authenticity.

He entered cinema through professional theatre and went on to act in numerous popular films such as "Manasaare" (2009), "Pancharangi", "Mattanondu Madhuvena", and "Myna". His performance style, marked by sharp wit and regional flavour, made him a favourite among both rural and urban viewers.

In addition to his film career, Talikote was the owner of the Khasgateshwar Drama Board based in Talikote, and remained an active figure in the theatre community for decades. His stage plays like “Kaliyugada Kuduka”, “Kudukara Saamrajya”, and “Asali Kuduka” gained significant popularity across North Karnataka, especially during the cassette era. His humorous portrayals of inebriated characters became cultural staples in the region.

He was also a contestant in Bigg Boss Kannada Season 7, where he further showcased his affable and witty personality to a broader television audience.

Due to prolonged health issues, Talikote had reduced his theatre and film activities in recent years but remained creatively engaged. He was actively involved in his final project, which also stars actor Shine Shetty, right until the day of his passing.

According to his son, the last rites will be conducted in Vijayapura, his native district.

Condolences have poured in from across the Kannada film fraternity and fans alike. Prominent directors, actors, and theatre personalities have taken to social media to express grief and pay tribute to the late actor’s enduring legacy in Karnataka’s entertainment landscape.
