Chennai, Oct 13: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary Nirmal Kumar has been arrested for allegedly making derogatory comments on a Madras High Court judge over recent orders concerning the Karur stampede tragedy, which claimed 41 lives. A local court has remanded him to judicial custody for two weeks, police said.
A senior officer confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations are underway. According to police sources, Nirmal Kumar had allegedly posted offensive remarks and a photograph on social media criticising the judge’s observations regarding the tragedy.

The Madras High Court had recently set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by IGP Asra Garg to probe the incident and also made strong remarks about TVK Chief and actor Vijay not visiting the victims’ families.
The party later approached the Supreme Court, challenging the order and demanding a CBI probe, terming the court’s comments “politically damaging.”
So far, two TVK functionaries, including Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan, have been arrested in connection with the case. Police are also searching for TVK General Secretary (Organisation) Bussy Anand, whose anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the High Court.
Police have blamed the tragedy on TVK, citing crowd mismanagement and the delay in Vijay’s arrival. The party, however, has denied any wrongdoing, accusing the DMK government of a political vendetta and police failure in crowd control.
