‘Mane Manege Police’ initiative begins in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Oct 13: The state government has launched a new initiative titled ‘Mane Manege Police’ (Police at Every Doorstep) with the aim of strengthening a people-friendly policing system. However, due to lack of adequate public awareness and limited promotion, the initiative has caused confusion and concern among residents in Dakshina Kannada (DK).

The primary objective of the programme is to build trust between the police and the public, while creating a sense of safety and security in society. Yet, many residents have little or no information about the project, leaving them uncertain about how to respond when police officers visit their homes for inquiries.

The initiative, said to be the first of its kind in the country, involves officers visiting every household to listen to public grievances and take necessary action. The project is also expected to raise awareness about legal issues, collect vital information for the police department, and assist in preventing and detecting crimes.

When the initiative was implemented in Bengaluru, it reportedly faced some criticism in certain areas. Similarly, in Dakshina Kannada, many people remain unaware of the scheme due to lack of publicity and outreach. Citizens have expressed dissatisfaction, noting that there have been no efforts to educate the public about the purpose and benefits of the programme.

On Saturday, police personnel began visiting homes in several suburban areas of Mangaluru to collect information. While some residents responded positively, others expressed apprehension. In some instances, residents contacted local social workers or community leaders for guidance, worried about officers visiting their homes, asking questions, and taking photographs of their houses.

During their visits, police officers asked residents questions such as whether they were facing any personal issues, experiencing harassment, had suspicions of drug sales, knew of any child abuse cases, or had been victims of cyber fraud or digital arrest scams. They urged people not to hide any problems and to share their concerns freely, assuring that the police would provide assistance and support.

Although the initiative is widely regarded as a positive and progressive step by the police department, the sudden implementation without prior public awareness has led to confusion. Many citizens have suggested that the police department should first conduct awareness campaigns to explain the purpose of the programme and help build confidence among the public.
