Meghalaya police defuse IED, terror threat averted

Ri Bhoi, Oct 12: A potential terror incident was averted in Ri Bhoi district after Meghalaya Police successfully defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) found in an abandoned bag in a residential area of Umsning on Saturday evening.

Police sources said residents spotted the suspicious bag around 7:30 pm and alerted authorities. The Ri Bhoi District Police immediately called the Special Bomb Squad from Shillong, which confirmed the presence of an IED. The device was safely defused and taken to the Umsning Police Outpost for further investigation.

The suspect who allegedly planted the explosive has been identified, and a detailed probe is underway under the supervision of Ri Bhoi SSP Vivekananda Singh Rathore. No casualties or property damage were reported during the operation.
