Kolkata, Oct 11: In a series of disturbing incidents, Kolkata Police have taken rapid action in connection with two separate alleged sexual assaults reported over the weekend.
On Saturday morning, a young man was arrested in the city's port area on charges of raping a woman with disabilities. The arrest came hours after a formal complaint was filed late Friday night at the Nadial Police Station. According to a city police official, an FIR was registered immediately, and an investigation began without delay, leading to the suspect's apprehension around 6:30 a.m. outside his residence. Police have temporarily withheld the identity of the accused pending his court appearance, where the public prosecutor is expected to request police custody.

Separately, police are investigating the alleged gang rape of a second-year MBBS student from Odisha that reportedly occurred late Friday outside a private medical college in Durgapur, West Burdwan district. Authorities confirmed Saturday that the student was allegedly dragged to a secluded spot and assaulted. While a case has been registered against multiple individuals involved in this incident, no arrests have been made as of yet.
These cases are the latest in a troubling wave of sexual violence that has plagued West Bengal over the past year, drawing intense national scrutiny.
The state has been in the spotlight following multiple incidents of rape and murder, often involving minor victims. One of the most high-profile cases was the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor inside the premises of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last August.
