Mangaluru: Hotelier, philanthropist Pattumudi Suryanarayana Rao passes away at 73

Mangaluru, Oct 10: Prominent hotelier, philanthropist, and well-known entrepreneur Pattumudi Suryanarayana Rao, owner of Janata Deluxe Hotel in Mangaluru, passed away on Friday, October 10, following a brief illness. He was 73.

Rao breathed his last at around 5:30 pm at a private hospital in Mangaluru, where he had been admitted due to health complications. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and numerous relatives, friends, and admirers.

Originally a native of Pattumudi, Manchi in Bantwal taluk, Rao began his journey in the hospitality sector by setting up hotel ventures in Kundapura and Udupi, before making a mark in Mangaluru’s business landscape.

He established the well-known Janata Deluxe Hotel on K S Rao Road, which became one of the city’s iconic eateries. Later, he constructed Pattumudi Sowda on M G Road, which houses a vegetarian restaurant and a banquet hall, further expanding his contributions to the city’s hospitality scene. For over three decades, Rao was deeply involved in the hotel and catering industry, earning a reputation for quality service and trust.

Apart from his entrepreneurial success, Rao was also known for his generosity and philanthropic efforts, often supporting community events, religious causes, and charitable activities. His down-to-earth nature and willingness to give back to society earned him great respect among people from all walks of life.

His last rites will be held on Saturday morning, with the public being allowed to pay their final respects at Pattumudi Sowda between 8 am and 10 am.

Mangaluru mourns the loss of a respected businessman whose legacy lives on through his contributions to the city’s culture, cuisine, and community spirit.
