Udupi, Sep 30: The Amasebailu police have arrested a man accused of cheating a jewellery store by purchasing gold rings worth thousands of rupees without making payment.

The incident dates back to November 3, 2024, when a man identifying himself as "Santosh" arrived at Sri Krishna Jewellery, Hosangadi, in a car. Claiming he was buying a gift, he purchased two gold rings worth around Rs 30,000.

The accused reportedly showed the jeweller a fake NEFT payment confirmation on his mobile phone and walked away with the rings. When the payment failed to reflect in the shop’s account, the store owner Manjunath Golla contacted the man, who allegedly assured that he would pay the following day — but never did.

A case was registered at the Amasebailu police station. Following a thorough investigation, police traced the absconding suspect, identified as Praveen, and arrested him on September 29.

Officers also recovered the car used in the crime and the stolen gold rings. The accused has been produced before the court as further investigation continues.

The swift action of the Amasebailu police has been lauded for bringing the accused to justice and recovering the stolen valuables.
