Raipur, Sep 27: In a dramatic bust, Chhattisgarh police arrested a Maoist couple who had lived undetected in Raipur for nearly six years while allegedly operating as urban cadres for the banned CPI (Maoist).

Jaggu Kursaam alias Ramesh (28), a Bhairamgarh divisional committee member carrying a Rs 13 lakh bounty, and his wife Kamla (27), an area committee member, were picked up from their rented home in Changorabhata after sustained surveillance and an intercepted phone call to a senior Maoist leader.

Investigators said Ramesh, fluent in English, worked as a security guard and driver in government and private residences, secretly gathering intelligence for the outfit, while Kamla helped arrange medical aid and shelter for fellow rebels. Both had forged Aadhaar cards and kept a low profile, working as construction labourers and avoiding close interactions with neighbours.

The couple, originally from Savanar village in Bijapur district’s Gangloor area, reportedly confessed to aiding the Maoist network by creating urban bases in the state capital. Police recovered a gold biscuit, ?1.15 lakh in cash, and other incriminating material from their house.

An FIR was filed at Deen Dayal Nagar police station, and they were produced before the NIA court in Bilaspur on Friday. Kamla was remanded to judicial custody, while Ramesh was sent to three days of police custody for detailed interrogation. The case has now been handed over to the state intelligence agency for further investigation.
