Technical glitches hamper socio-educational survey in Dakshina Kannada; teachers struggle

Mangaluru, Sep 27: The socio-educational survey in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district on Friday once again ran into technical glitches, leaving teachers engaged in census duties struggling throughout the day.

Due to app-related problems, many enumerators faced severe difficulties. In several cases, despite visiting 10 houses, only one entry was approved, while in some instances, no data was recorded at all. Teachers reported that after spending hours at each household collecting complete details, they were unable to upload the information due to persistent technical issues, resulting in a day-long ordeal.

Adding to their woes, the district administration’s directive requiring enumerators to remain in the field until 8 pm has raised concerns among teachers. They questioned the logic of such instructions when the app itself was malfunctioning. Teachers urged the government to first resolve the technical issues and only then impose such mandatory guidelines.

In Mangaluru city, teachers faced another challenge. In residential complexes, enumerators were often treated as strangers, with some residents refusing to participate in the survey, saying they did not want to be part of it. In some houses, there was no response at all, causing further frustration to the enumerators.

Apart from technical problems, enumerators are also dealing with other risks. Sarita, a teacher from Marakada School in the outskirts of Mangaluru, sustained injuries after being bitten by a dog while on survey duty.
