New Delhi, Sep 21: Lung cancer remains one of the world’s deadliest cancers, but experts stress that lifestyle choices can greatly reduce the risk.
Oncologists warn that smoking is the biggest culprit, linked to nearly 90 per cent of lung cancer cases. “Quitting works. The best time to quit was yesterday; the next best time is now,” doctors advise, noting that risk begins to drop within five years of quitting.

Secondhand smoke, too, increases lung cancer risk by about 24 per cent for non-smokers, while air pollution from vehicles, factories and waste burning silently damages lung tissue. A nutrient-rich diet, regular exercise and cleaner air practices—such as using public transport and supporting renewable energy—are key preventive steps.
“Lung cancer builds up over years of exposure and damage,” doctors caution. “Prevention is freedom. Protect your lungs today, for yourself and everyone who breathes beside you.”
