Los Angeles, Sep 19: Hollywood icon Julia Roberts has revealed she is in early discussions to reprise her beloved role in a sequel to the 1997 rom-com classic “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

“They’re talking to me,” Roberts told Variety, adding that acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, who quickly offered to direct the project, is also enthusiastic about the idea.

The sequel is in its formative stage with Past Lives and Materialists writer Celine Song attached to draft the screenplay, though no director has been confirmed. The news follows comments by Roberts’ original co-star Dermot Mulroney, who recently teased that “there is talk of a sequel.”

The original film followed food critic Julianne Potter (Roberts) as she tries to sabotage the wedding of her longtime friend Michael O’Neal (Mulroney) after realizing she loves him. Co-starring Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett, the film grossed $127 million in North America, ranked ninth in 1997’s domestic box office, and earned three Golden Globe nominations.

Roberts will next be seen in “After the Hunt,” a drama releasing on October 10, 2025, where she plays a college professor entangled in a tense sexual abuse case.
