Washington, Sep 19: US President Donald Trump has suggested that television networks critical of him could face punitive action, after ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show over remarks made about the killing of conservative activist and Trump aide Charlie Kirk.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump claimed that 97 per cent of networks were against him and hinted that broadcast licenses could be revoked. “They give me only bad press. I mean, they’re getting a license. I would think maybe their licenses should be taken away,” he said.
The FCC clarified that it does not license major networks like CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox.

Kimmel had suggested on his show that Kirk’s shooter was a Trump supporter and accused “the MAGA gang” of exploiting the tragedy. He also mocked Trump’s response on the matter, which included mention of a new White House ballroom.
The comments drew strong criticism from Trump’s allies. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr accused Kimmel of misleading the public and hinted at “remedies.” Soon after, ABC suspended the show, citing broadcaster concerns and declining ratings.
Trump welcomed the decision, calling Kimmel a “ZERO talent” and urging NBC to act against other late-night hosts.
The move has triggered a debate on free speech, with veteran host David Letterman and former President Barack Obama warning against political interference in media. Obama said the administration was engaging in “government coercion” against outlets it dislikes, in violation of the First Amendment.
