25-year-old Ludhiana youth goes missing in Russia; family seeks centre’s help

Ludhiana, Sep 18: Panic has gripped a family in Ludhiana after their 25-year-old son, Samarjit Singh, who had gone to Russia to pursue medical studies, has gone missing for the past 10 days.

Samarjit, a resident of the Daba area, left for Russia in July this year with valid documents. His father, Charanjit Singh, who runs a small grocery shop, said everything seemed fine until the family suddenly lost contact with him. Despite repeated attempts, they have been unable to reach him.

Matters took a disturbing turn after a video surfaced on social media recently, showing Samarjit in army uniform, alongside other youths, appealing to the Indian Government to rescue them. In the video, they alleged that Indians were being forced to join the Russian army amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

“We are unable to verify how genuine the video is or how Samarjit ended up in this situation. The family is in deep distress. His father has been continuously writing to Central Government agencies in Delhi to intervene and help trace him,” said Sukhdev Singh, Samarjit’s maternal cousin.

Sukhdev further stated that the family had no knowledge of Samarjit joining the military. “He had gone only to study medicine. We don’t know whether he was trapped or coerced into joining the army. All we can do is seek the Indian Government’s help to bring him back safely,” he added.

The family has urged authorities to urgently investigate the matter and ensure the safe return of Samarjit, along with other youths reportedly caught in a similar situation.
