East Midnapore, Sep 16: In a shocking incident, the facility manager of Panskura Super Specialty Hospital in Bengal’s East Midnapore district has been arrested for allegedly raping several female staffers and threatening to kill them if they spoke out.
The accused, identified as Zahir Abbas Khan, reportedly summoned contractual ward attendants to his office and assaulted them, warning of dire consequences, including job loss. The crime came to light after one of the survivors filed a complaint at Panskura police station. Khan has been taken into custody and will be produced in court later today.

Officials said the survivors have demanded the “strictest punishment” for the accused. The hospital authorities are yet to issue a statement. Meanwhile, locals staged a protest outside the police station condemning the incident.
The BJP alleged that Khan enjoyed “considerable influence,” hinting at a link to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). However, TMC leader Sheikh Samir Uddin dismissed the charge, calling Khan a “fraud” who misused the party’s name for personal gain, and demanded severe punishment.
The case comes close on the heels of the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College last year, which led to nationwide protests. The victim’s parents recently met CBI Director Praveen Sood, expressing dissatisfaction over the probe and led a ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ rally that turned violent, leaving the mother injured during a police lathi-charge.
