Meerut, Sep 13: A 40-year-old man died by suicide in Meerut’s Lisari Gate area after allegedly facing sustained harassment from his wife and in-laws, police said on Friday.

The deceased, identified as Jaan Mohammad, consumed poison on Thursday and left three videos—lasting five, four-and-a-half and three-and-a-half minutes—detailing his disputes with his wife Shehnaz and her family.

SP City Ayush Vikram Singh said the body has been sent for post-mortem and the videos are under forensic examination. “Preliminary inquiry points to ongoing conflicts with his wife, brother-in-law and other relatives,” Singh stated.

Based on a complaint from the victim’s brother, Aas Mohammad, police booked Shehnaz, her mother Ahmed Nisha, brothers Israr, Shan Mohammad, Qasim, Qasif, and relatives Salauddin and Salman on charges of mental and physical harassment and abetment to suicide.

Aas Mohammad alleged Shehnaz had been living at her parental home in Jalalabad, Muradnagar, for two weeks and insisted the house be transferred to her name. He said Jaan had mortgaged the house and sold his tempo to fund her treatment after she allegedly consumed acid three months ago.

In the videos, Jaan reportedly requested that his house be given to his four unmarried daughters after his death. Police said further action will follow the post-mortem and detailed analysis of the recordings.
