Adults can regenerate brain cells; resistance training key to boosting growth

New York, Sep 10: For decades, school textbooks taught us that once brain cells die, they are gone forever. But neuroscience is now rewriting that theory. Studies reveal that adults can indeed grow new neurons — a process crucial for memory, learning, and healthy aging.

Neuroscientist Robert Love, who specialises in Alzheimer’s prevention, has shed light on this breakthrough. In a video message shared on September 8, he explained that adults are capable of regenerating neurons, thanks to a vital brain chemical called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF).

“BDNF is like fertilizer for the brain. It promotes the growth of new brain cells and helps build strong neural connections,” Robert said, adding that this chemical is released during exercise. Interestingly, he pointed out that resistance training — not aerobic exercise — produces the maximum levels of BDNF, making it the most effective workout for brain health.

Citing pioneering work by Princeton neuroscientist Elizabeth Gould and other studies published in Science and Nature, Robert noted that the hippocampus — the brain’s memory hub — continues to generate new neurons even in adulthood. “Contrary to what we all learnt in school, the fact that adults cannot grow brain cells is no longer true,” he asserted.

Robert further quoted Dr. Austin Perlmutter, saying: “If you want the best exercise to boost brain cell growth, it’s resistance training. Push against something, pull against something, lift weights or even do body-weight squats and push-ups — that’s fantastic for your brain.”

Apart from enhancing cognitive function, higher BDNF levels are linked with healthy aging and a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, experts say. Robert advised beginners to train under proper guidance.

“Your muscles don’t just build strength; they release chemicals that fuel your brain. With resistance training, you’re not only protecting your body, you’re future-proofing your mind,” he concluded.
