Mumbai, Sep 7: The latest installment of the popular horror franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites, has opened to a thundering response at the global box office, surpassing all expectations with a record-breaking start.
On Friday, the film collected $34.5 million, including $8.5 million from previews, surpassing the $22 million opening of The Nun (2018). Early estimates suggest a $75–80 million weekend in North America alone.
Warner Bros. continues its winning streak with this release, marking its seventh straight film to cross $40 million on opening weekend — a feat unmatched by any other studio. Globally, the Michael Chaves directorial earned $47.3 million on Friday across 60 markets, heading for a debut of $165–170 million against a $55 million budget. A $170 million start would make it Hollywood’s third-biggest horror opening ever, behind only the two It films.
In India, The Conjuring: Last Rites registered a strong IMAX release, grossing Rs 17.5 crore on day one across languages, outperforming Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 4 (Rs 12 crore). On day two, it added Rs 17.3 crore, taking its total to Rs 34.8 crore. The film now ranks as the seventh highest-grossing Hollywood horror film in India, just behind Evil Dead Rise (Rs 36.5 crore), achieving the feat in just two days.
Meanwhile, Bollywood struggled to keep pace. Baaghi 4 dropped to Rs 9 crore on Saturday, while The Bengal Files managed only Rs 2.25 crore.
