Lucknow, Sep 4: In a shocking incident, a man shot dead his wife in the middle of a crowded market in Gorakhpur on Wednesday evening, sending shockwaves through the locality.

The incident occurred around 8 pm on Jail Road in Shahpur area. The accused, identified as Vishwakarma Chauhan, arrived at the spot on his bike with a pistol concealed inside his helmet. His wife, Mamta Chauhan, who had gone to a photo studio to get her picture clicked, was confronted by him outside the premises.

An argument soon broke out between the two, which escalated into a scuffle. In a fit of rage, Vishwakarma drew the pistol and fired two shots at Mamta — one striking her chest and the other her hand. She collapsed on the spot.

Bystanders rushed her to a private hospital, but doctors declared her brought dead. Shockingly, Vishwakarma remained at the scene for nearly 25 minutes after the crime, repeatedly telling onlookers, “I was very troubled by her.” Police arrived soon after and arrested him.

According to police, Vishwakarma and Mamta had been married for 15 years but had been living separately for the past year and a half due to marital disputes. Mamta resided with their 13-year-old daughter in a rented house near Geeta Vatika in Shahpur, while working at a private firm on Bank Road. Her parental home is in Khajni.

Confirming the incident, Shahpur police station SHO Neeraj Rai said that Vishwakarma has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway.
