Bengaluru, Sept 3: In a surprising career move, acclaimed Sandalwood actress Sruthi Hariharan, best known for her breakthrough performance in the cult hit Lucia, is now making her television debut. For the first time in her career, Sruthi is stepping away from the silver screen to take on a pivotal role in a devotional serial.

The show, titled ‘Sri Raghavendra Mahathme’, is far from a typical daily soap. It’s a spiritually-driven drama that explores the divine life, teachings, and miracles of Sri Raghavendra Swamiji, often hailed as the Kamadhenu of Kaliyuga, said to grant boons to devoted followers.

The serial premiered on September 1and is being broadcast Monday to Friday at 9 PM on Zee Kannada.

A Mythical role: Kayadu – Mother of Prahlada

In this mythological production, Sruthi portrays Kayadu, the wife of demon king Hiranyakashipu and the mother of the devout Prahlada. This is a significant and emotionally rich role, pivotal to the narrative of the saint’s life story.

“This is not just a brief appearance or supporting role,” revealed a source close to the show’s production. “Sruthi plays an emotionally intense and powerful mythological character — and her portrayal of Kayadu is expected to be both nuanced and memorable.”

Films to TV: A bold shift

Sruthi’s move from films to television has surprised many in the industry. Known for her strong, character-driven performances, she’s now venturing into television with a project rooted in devotion and cultural storytelling — a relatively rare genre for mainstream actresses.

Sruthi has long been a respected name in South Indian cinema, having acted in acclaimed Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam films. Her filmography includes Lucia, Rathaavara, Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu, U Turn, Urvi, Tarak, and Nathicharami. Apart from being a celebrated actress, she is also a trained classical dancer.

A packed schedule: Three films ready for release

While she explores the world of television, Sruthi remains actively involved in cinema. She has recently completed three Kannada films — Just Married (already released), Strawberry, and Nidra Devi Next Door — all of which are in line for release.

Her decision to foray into television while continuing film projects reflects a versatile approach and a desire to engage with diverse audiences through varied formats.

As Sri Raghavendra Mahathme airs, all eyes will be on how Sruthi Hariharan brings to life one of mythology’s most quietly powerful maternal figures — blending devotion, emotion, and artistry on the small screen.
