Jammu, Sep 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited flood-ravaged areas in Jammu on Monday, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to swift relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding efforts following the recent devastation caused by heavy rainfall and flash floods.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Shah stated that he chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the flood situation and the response efforts. "Instructed the water supply and health departments to work at full capacity to meet emerging healthcare needs. The Modi government will continue to provide rapid relief and all necessary financial and technological support," he posted.
Ground Assessment of Flood Damage
Shah began the day by inspecting the Tawi Bridge, which suffered extensive structural damage in the floods, and visited the Bikram Chowk area, where private properties—including shops, warehouses, and homes—were severely affected.
He also travelled to Chak Mangu village, one of the worst-hit rural pockets, to meet affected families and oversee ongoing relief and rescue operations.
"The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands firmly with the people of Jammu and will leave no stone unturned in helping them rebuild their lives," Shah declared during his visit.
Political and Administrative Support
Shah was accompanied by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, senior administration officials, and BJP leaders. The Chief Minister’s Office later issued a statement on X, thanking the Home Minister for personally reviewing the situation.
"The visit underscores the seriousness of the crisis and will enhance coordination. Our priority is timely relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding," said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Abdullah also clarified to reporters that Shah's visit was entirely focused on flood damage assessment, with no scheduled meetings related to security or development projects.
Central Government Deploys IMCTs to Affected States
Ahead of his arrival in Jammu, Amit Shah had announced the formation of Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) for Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab — all states impacted by severe rainfall, flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides in recent weeks.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the IMCTs will make on-the-ground assessments of the damage and the quality of relief work carried out by respective State and Union Territory governments.
The MHA also confirmed that it remains in constant touch with state officials and has deployed NDRF teams, Army units, and Air Force helicopters for ongoing rescue efforts and restoration of essential services.
“The Central Government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with all disaster-hit states, working under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi to minimise human suffering and expedite recovery,” the statement read.
Continuing Challenges
As rescue operations continue, officials estimate property losses in crores across several regions of Jammu, especially in urban hubs like Bikram Chowk. The health department has been put on alert for water-borne diseases and post-flood medical emergencies.
The visit by the Union Home Minister, coupled with central relief mechanisms and state coordination, has brought some much-needed assurance to flood-affected residents who now await quick rehabilitation and compensation for their losses.
