New Delhi, Aug 27: A 22-year-old godown worker has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly stealing Rs 4.5 lac in cash from his employer’s office after being denied an advance on his salary.

The incident took place on the intervening night of August 19-20 in Najafgarh, Dwarka district. The accused, identified as Mumtaz, was nabbed within eight hours of the crime by the Anti-Burglary Cell of Dwarka Police, which also recovered Rs 3.14 lac from his possession.

According to police, the burglary came to light after godown owner Mukul Jain lodged a complaint of missing cash. Investigations revealed that Mumtaz, who worked as a loader at the godown, had concealed his identity with a plastic sack, disabled CCTV cameras and entered the office through the false ceiling.

Police said suspicion fell on him after his mobile phone location placed him near the crime scene. On interrogation, Mumtaz admitted to the crime, claiming frustration over being denied an advance salary. He confessed that the heist was both an attempt to earn “easy money” and to “teach his employer a lesson.”

Investigators added that Mumtaz was well-versed with the godown’s security and entry points. The guard dogs did not raise an alarm as they were familiar with him. Police further suspect the involvement of an associate, identified as Vikas, in the crime.
