Ahmedabad, Aug 26: The Donald Trump administration has issued a notice imposing an additional 25 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, effective from 12:01 am EST on August 27.

The move, announced by the US Department of Homeland Security, is part of Washington’s new trade policy and will sharply raise the overall duties on Indian goods.

Reacting to the development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday assured citizens that India will withstand the pressure.

“No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it,” he said while addressing a public rally in Ahmedabad’s Nikol area.

The Prime Minister stressed that his government will always safeguard the interests of small entrepreneurs, farmers, shopkeepers and livestock rearers.

“From the soil of Ahmedabad, I promise you, the interests of small entrepreneurs, farmers and livestock rearers are of utmost priority. Dabav kitna hi kyon na aaye, hum jhelne ki apni takat badhate jayenge (No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it),” he declared.
