Chitrakoot, Aug 24: In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot consumed poison along with her three children following a quarrel with her husband over money for ‘gutkha’. The woman and two of her children died, while one child remains in critical condition.

The deceased has been identified as Jyoti Yadav, wife of driver Babbu Yadav. According to police, Jyoti was addicted to chewing tobacco and had asked her husband for money on Saturday morning. When he refused, the argument escalated. Later that evening, she allegedly consumed poison and forced her children to take it as well.

On returning home, Babbu found his four-year-old son crying in pain, saying his mother had given him “something bitter”. Their one-year-old daughter Bulbul had already died, while Jyoti lay in critical condition.

They were rushed to Majhgawan Community Health Centre, where doctors confirmed Bulbul’s death. Jyoti and her four-year-old daughter Chandrama died on the way to Satna District Hospital. Only five-year-old Deepchand survived and is battling for life in hospital.

Relatives and locals revealed that disputes over Jyoti’s gutkha addiction were frequent in the family. Her husband had often objected, fearing its impact on their children’s future.

Block Medical Officer Rupesh Soni confirmed that poison ingestion was evident when the family was brought in. Police have launched further investigation into the incident.
