Bantwal, Aug 17: In a bizarre turn of events, a man from Kundapura has reported the alleged theft of Rs 1 lac in cash from his pocket while waiting at the B C Road bus stand in Bantwal. The complaint, filed two days after the incident, has prompted police to begin reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
The complainant, identified as Ranganath, told police that he had recently sold his car and was carrying Rs 1.6 lac in cash— three bundles of Rs 50,000 and one of Rs 10,000—in his pocket. He had travelled to Kaikamba, near B C Road, on August 12, with the intention of purchasing a new car.
“I came with full payment in hand, but since the car documents were not in order, I stayed at a friend’s house nearby,” he said in his statement to the police.
On the morning of August 15, while waiting for a bus to Kottigehara, Ranganath claims he discovered that two bundles of Rs 50,000 each were missing from his pocket just after boarding the bus — leaving only Rs 60,000 with him. “I didn’t notice anything unusual until I got on the bus and checked my pocket,” he stated.
Though the incident occurred on Thursday, he approached Bantwal Town police station only on Sunday, raising questions over the delay.
Police have registered a case under suspicious circumstances and are currently scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity of the bus stand and Kaikamba area to trace any suspects or movements linked to the alleged theft.
Further investigation is underway.
