New Delhi, Aug 17: In a major infrastructure boost aimed at decongesting the national capital and improving travel efficiency in the NCR, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated two mega projects – a key stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway.
Together worth Rs 11,000 crore, the projects are part of the government’s vision to provide “world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.
Addressing a gathering at Rohini, PM Modi congratulated the people of Delhi-NCR, saying the projects will transform travel and connectivity across the region. “When the world judges India, it first looks at our capital, Delhi. We want to make Delhi a model of a developed India. In the past 11 years, travel in NCR has become easier due to our efforts,” the Prime Minister remarked.
Taking a political swipe, PM Modi said: “The previous governments left Delhi in a ditch. The BJP government has taken up the responsibility of filling that ditch and ensuring development. The elected team will pull Delhi out of this situation.”
The event was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Mr Saini noted that Haryana would be the biggest beneficiary of these projects, while Mr Gadkari said the new highways would reduce Delhi’s traffic congestion by nearly 50 per cent.
Urban Extension Road-II
The six-lane, 75-km UER-II begins at NH-44, passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, before ending at the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway near Mahipalpur. The newly opened Alipur-Dichaon Kalan stretch, built at a cost of Rs 5,580 crore, provides spurs to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat.
According to officials, this corridor will ease traffic pressure on Inner and Outer Ring Roads, as well as choke points such as Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09. It will also reduce travel time from Indira Gandhi International Airport to southwest and northwest Delhi by 40 to 60 per cent.
Dwarka Expressway (Delhi Section)
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 10.1-km Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway, developed at a cost of Rs 5,360 crore. The stretch enhances connectivity to Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Delhi Metro’s Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka Bus Depot cluster.
It has two parts – a 5.9-km stretch from Shiv Murti intersection to Dwarka Sector-21 and a 4.2-km stretch from Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana border, linking Dwarka Expressway with UER-II.
In March last year, PM Modi had inaugurated the Haryana section of the expressway spanning 19 km.
Officials say these new links will not only benefit daily commuters but also improve industrial connectivity, enhance goods movement, and give a big push to the overall infrastructure landscape of Delhi-NCR.
