Patriotic spirit shines at Mount Carmel’s 79th Independence Day celebration

Mangaluru, Aug 15: A wave of patriotic pride swept across the grounds of Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru, as it marked the 79th Independence Day of India with dignity, enthusiasm, and a vibrant display of culture.

Meticulously organised by the students of grade VIII A, B, and C under the guidance of dedicated faculty, the celebration brought together students, staff, parents and distinguished guests in a spirit of unity and national pride.

The day began with a warm welcome by the student anchors Kynon and Mihira, setting a gracious and ceremonial tone for the occasion. The arrival of the chief guest, PO Tony Pinto (Retd), was accorded due honour with a grand escort by the school band, accompanied by joint secretary Sr Josephine Pais, principal Sr Melissa, administrator Sr Carissima, superior Sr Asha Prima and vice principal Sr Teena.

Led ceremoniously to the flag post by the NCC cadets, the chief guest unfurled the National Flag to the stirring strains of the National Anthem. The school choir followed with a heartfelt rendition of the Jhanda Geet, filling the air with patriotic fervour.

Head girl Karen administered the pledge, reinforcing the values of unity, peace and national service. This was followed by a disciplined march past by the NCC, Scouts and Guides, and students of each class, a sight that reflected the dignity and pride of the day.

The celebration then transitioned to the school auditorium where a rich cultural programme unfolded, reflecting India’s illustrious history, cultural diversity, and enduring spirit. It opened with a soulful prayer invoking blessings for the nation, followed by a vibrant welcome dance symbolising the confluence of India’s cultural traditions. Venetia and Shreevardhini extended a warm welcome address, after which principal Sr Melissa presented the chief guest with a flowering sapling, an symbol of growth, sustainability and hope.

The significance of the day was powerfully conveyed by Rhea Jasmine, who reminded the audience that August 15 stands as a testament to the sacrifice, resilience, and courage of countless freedom fighters. Her words underscored the relevance of freedom in the present context, calling upon the youth to honour this legacy with responsibility and purpose.

The cultural showcase that followed was a tapestry of patriotic songs, thematic dances, and dramatic enactments, each performance reflecting the spirit of India’s freedom movement.

A poignant highlight was a dance sequence paying tribute to the nation’s women warriors and valiant soldiers, an emotional reminder of the many unsung heroes who helped shape India’s destiny.

A moment of special pride was the felicitation of Taksheel M Devadiga, a multi-talented Carmelite prodigy. A record-holder, accomplished saxophonist, and award-winning cricketer, Taksheel was honoured for his exceptional achievements in arts and sports. His soul-stirring saxophone performance during the event stood as a testament to his artistry and dedication.

In his keynote address, the chief guest, PO Tony Pinto (Retd), spoke with pride about the Indian Navy, making special mention of INS Vikrant as a symbol of the nation’s maritime strength. He encouraged students to embrace discipline, patriotism, and a sense of duty as they grow into responsible citizens.

Principal Sr Melissa, in her address, reflected on the deeper meaning of true freedom. She emphasised the need to imbibe true freedom, not merely as a right, but as a responsibility to act with justice, compassion, and respect for all. She urged the students to work towards building a just, inclusive, and progressive India.

The day also featured a prize distribution ceremony; honouring winners of competitions held in the lead-up to Independence Day. The march past champions were felicitated by PTA vice president Anantesh Prabhu for their precision, discipline, and spirit.

The celebration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Pranav, expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to its success. Kristen and Andria compered the programme with grace and confidence, ensuring its smooth flow from start to finish. A captivating finale by the students of grade VIII A, B and C brought the event to a close, a fitting tribute to India and a celebration to be remembered.
The Independence Day 2025 at Mount Carmel Central School was not merely a commemoration of freedom; it was a reaffirmation of the school’s mission to nurture patriotic, value-driven, and socially responsible citizens for the future.
