Melbourne, Aug 15: A peaceful celebration of India’s 79th Independence Day outside the Indian Consulate in Melbourne was marred on Friday when pro-Khalistan supporters disrupted the gathering.

According to The Australia Today, Indian nationals had assembled to mark the occasion when a group carrying Khalistani flags arrived, raising separatist slogans. Videos circulating online show a heated verbal exchange between the two sides. In response, Indians countered with patriotic songs.

Australian authorities swiftly intervened to prevent the altercation from turning physical. The national flag was later hoisted at the consulate to the resounding chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram.”

The incident comes just weeks after pro-Khalistan elements defaced the Swaminarayan Temple in Boronia, Australia, with hateful graffiti reading, “Go home brown c**t.”
