Agartala, Aug 11: Tripura Police have arrested a 28-year-old woman, Suchitra Debbarma, for allegedly killing her five-month-old child in Sepahijala district. Preliminary investigations suggest she strangled the infant to death to facilitate her plan to elope with a man she had been involved with for a year.

The incident came to light after neighbours alerted authorities. A police team led by Tapas Das, officer-in-charge of Sonamura police station, visited their home in Rampadapara on Sunday. The baby was found lifeless on a bed, while Suchitra was missing. The infant was taken to Sonamura sub-divisional hospital, where doctors confirmed the death.

Suchitra was later arrested from the village. During interrogation, she confessed to killing the child while her husband, Amit Debbarma, was away at work in a rubber plantation. She admitted her intention to kill the baby and elope with her extramarital partner. Post-mortem is scheduled to confirm the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.
