Imphal, Aug 6: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called for the restoration of an elected government in the state, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13. Singh resigned from the Chief Minister's post on February 9, citing the worsening law and order situation.

Speaking to the media after attending the Iputhou Marjing Expo in Imphal, Singh said, “Everyone is aware of the reasons and circumstances that led to the imposition of President’s Rule. But now, there is a clear need for a popular government. People are facing hardships without one.”

He stressed that only an elected government could engage directly with the public, address their concerns, and handle complex issues effectively. “As Chief Minister, I took strong action against drug peddlers and illegal encroachers. A government elected by the people is better positioned to take such decisive steps,” he said.

Singh noted that senior BJP leaders are assessing the situation and that efforts are underway to re-establish a popular government. He added that both the BJP and its allies support this move to better manage the ongoing crisis and restore peace.

He also mentioned that various leaders and civil society organisations have urged the central government to help bring about a peaceful resolution and normalize the situation. In June, Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, seeking his intervention.

Earlier in May, BJP's North East in-charge, Sambit Patra, visited Manipur and held talks with local leaders and Kuki-Zo civil society groups in Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts. He also met with former CM Singh and other leaders in Imphal.

The Manipur Assembly, which has 60 members, was placed under suspended animation following the imposition of President’s Rule. Its current term runs until 2027.
