Trump orders nuclear sub deployment amid war of words with Russia’s Medvedev

Washington, Aug 2: US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines near Russia, citing "highly provocative statements" by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump stated, “I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.” He warned that “words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences,” hoping the situation does not escalate further.

The sharp escalation follows a verbal clash between Trump and Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, after Trump reduced the timeline for imposing 100% tariffs on Russian goods. Medvedev had termed the move “a threat and a step towards war.”

Trump later lashed out at both Russia and India, calling them “dead economies,” prompting a fierce response from Medvedev. Citing Russia’s Cold War-era nuclear system “Dead Hand,” Medvedev warned that Russia is capable of launching retaliatory strikes even if its leadership is wiped out.

In a Telegram post dated July 31, Medvedev commented, “If some words from the former president of Russia trigger such a nervous reaction from the high-and-mighty president of the United States, then Russia is doing everything right.” He added, “Let him remember his favorite movies about the ‘walking dead’... and how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be.”

The back-and-forth has raised global concerns about heightened tensions between the US and Russia, with Trump’s latest move signaling a potential military standoff.
