Traverse City, Jul 27: In a horrifying incident on Saturday, at least 11 people were stabbed inside a Walmart store in Traverse City, with six currently in critical condition. Authorities described the attack as a "random act," and a suspect has been taken into custody.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, addressing reporters, said, “Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more.” Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene, and uniformed first responders secured the area.
Eyewitness Tiffany DeFell, 36, from nearby Honor, recounted the chaos: “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out. This is something you see in the movies—not where you live.”
According to Munson Healthcare, the region’s largest hospital, all 11 victims are being treated for stab wounds. Hospital spokesperson Megan Brown confirmed that six are in critical condition while five remain serious.
Sheriff Shea said the suspect used a folding-style knife and is believed to be a Michigan resident. He refrained from disclosing further information about the attacker.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow: “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.”
Walmart issued a statement condemning the attack: “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders."
The FBI has also stepped in to assist, with Deputy Director Dan Bongino stating on social media that bureau officials are on the ground providing support.
Traverse City, located on the shores of Lake Michigan and famed for its scenic beauty and cherry festival, is typically a peaceful vacation destination, making Saturday’s events all the more shocking for residents and tourists alike.
