Male, Jul 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reaffirmed India’s unwavering support to Maldives, calling the island nation a crucial part of New Delhi’s Neighbourhood First and MAHASAGAR vision. Addressing the press alongside President Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi called Maldives “India’s most trusted friend” and highlighted the enduring cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
During the joint statement, PM Modi congratulated the people of Maldives on the 60th anniversary of their independence and thanked President Muizzu for inviting him as the Guest of Honour. “The roots of our relations are older than history and as deep as the sea,” he said, adding that commemorative stamps released on the occasion reflected the shared maritime heritage of both countries.

He announced a Line of Credit of USD 565 million to support key infrastructure projects in Maldives, including the Greater Male Connectivity Project, Addu Road Development, and redevelopment of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport. Additionally, 4,000 social housing units built with Indian assistance will soon be inaugurated.
The PM emphasised increasing cooperation in the defence sector, citing the new Defence Ministry building as a “concrete symbol of mutual trust.” He said regional security would be strengthened through collaboration under the Colombo Security Conclave.
India and Maldives are also working on a Bilateral Investment Treaty and a Free Trade Agreement to boost economic ties. Modi added that the introduction of a local currency settlement system and the growing use of UPI in Maldives would further boost trade and tourism.
Climate change was another key agenda point. “It is a major challenge for both our countries. We have decided to promote renewable energy, and India will share its experience with Maldives,” Modi said.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi was warmly received at Male airport by President Muizzu, who personally welcomed him in a special gesture. A ceremonial welcome followed at Republic Square. This is PM Modi’s third visit to Maldives and the first by any head of state since Muizzu took office.
He will participate in Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations on Saturday as the Guest of Honour.
